Interactive Exhibition: UGC (User Generated Content) In Museums

In this piece of research I look into whether or not it would be possible to have an exhibition within a museum that was solely based on user generated content, and if so how would this work?

Content Management System

From my research I came to the conclusion for this to work the exhibition must have its own content management system, one for the user side and the other for a member of staff at the museum to control and give permissions for the UGC. This will mainly be attached to the application side of the exhibition that can be downloaded.

The content that is uploaded must also be able to be edited at a later date in case they want to add more images or notes.

The User CMS Needs:
The CMS for the user must be fairly simplistic and easy to use, allowing them to add photographs and add in the written content. The user must also be able to share and add tags to certain pieces of UGC.

The Staff CMS Needs:
The CMS for the staff must have an admin log in, and allow them to add permissions and filter the UGC dependent on whether or not the UGC is relative to the exhibition or if what has been uploaded is inappropriate.

Also something I have decided on, a memory can not be uploaded unless it is linked to at least one photograph and must have some information entered in.

API (Application Program Interface)

“a set of functions and procedures that allow the creation of applications which access the features or data of an operating system, application, or other service.”

Using an “Application Program Interface” will allow people at the museum to log onto there account’s on the website or social networking service the individual may use, from either the tablet or their own mobile device.

Websites and applications that allow permission for other services to use there API, which would be useful for this exhibition would be Facebook, Dropbox, and Twitter.

Allowing an individual to share a photograph they may have on there facebook of something relevant, and then writing the information in to go with it.

Filtering The UGC

Because this exhibition is based on UGC there will be a lot of content being uploaded, meaning there will be a lot of UGC to filter and moderate. During my research I came across a company called ‘Inversoft’.

Inversoft has an incredible and powerful moderation tool that filters text and images, and also works with outsourced moderation partners.

Alongside this the CMS built for the staff of the maritime museum, will be able to manually filter content, if some of the images get through that are not vulgare in anyway the staff of the maritime museum can decide whether they are relative to the subject matter, and give them permission to go up.

Can this be implemented?
To conclude on this piece of research I can say that this process of using UGC on the exhibition is possible.





For the first project in User Centred Design year two we have been asked to create an interactive exhibition for a museum in hull of our choosing. The exhibition must be a ‘Interactive Experience’ providing the user with a virtual space, when creating this I must take into account the different fields this application should include such as (touch, feel, sight, hearing). This interactive exhibition needs to capture the user, and keep them engaged within the subject that the exhibition is based upon.
